What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an 8 phase therapeutic protocol that uses a 3 pronged approach of the past, present, and future to allow for accessing and processing traumatic memories. The goal of EMDR is to provide adaptive resolutions to these negative experiences; for some people this helps to gain back or create a new and wanted life. In person and through virtual therapy, the clinician will use their hands, tapping, or another visual cue (a laser, finger puppets for children) to create side to side eye movements for processing. Is EMDR for me?

If you have experienced a single event that has caused difficulties with sleep, negative thoughts, intrusive memories, disturbances of sleep, overwhelming physical sensations, to name a few, then EMDR might be an option.

EMDR may also be the right fit if you have experienced many small or big traumas within your life. You may feel ‘stuck’ or repeating old mistakes out of fear, anger, or sadness. EMDR can help build new regulations techniques and guide you toward processing your trauma and regaining your life.

How long will EMDR take?

When introduced to EMDR, many people are curious as to how many sessions it will take to to complete. Since each person has a unique set of life experiences, EMDR should be tailored to fit your specific need. If you have concerns about the pace of your progress, I highly encourage you to discuss this with your clinician to meet your needs.
